IMI LEVEL 3 AWARD IN AUTOMOTIVE REFRIGERANT HANDLING

All Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) technicians working with cars and car derived vans, must have achieved as a minimum requirement, a refrigerant handling qualification which fulfills the European Union F-gas Regulation (EC842/2006 and Annex to Regulation EC307/2008).

Our IMI qualification is designed for MAC technicians to understand new legislation related to handling and serving air conditioning systems in order to meet the European Union F-Gas MAC regulations (Commission Regulation EC 842/2006 and the annex EC 307/2008).  It also includes the newly introduced R1234yf which replaces the R134a refrigerant.

The F-Gas regulation.

The F-Gas Regulation (EC) 842/2006  was adopted on 17th May 2006 and later revised and replaced by (EU) 517/2014 in April 2014. The overall aim of F-Gas is to reduce and contain emissions by using responsible refrigeration. These regulations include the requirement for Training and certification of technical personnel and companies working with F-gases.

On completion of this qualification, technicians will hold a valid certificate (attestation) to legally recover F-gas.

Entry Requirements

Candidates applying for this course must hold a Level 3 mechanical qualification or have relevant industry experience and is suited to those

  • technicians who wish to expand their breadth of knowledge in the routine servicing and maintenance of mobile air conditioning (MAC) systems.

  • competent MAC technicians who have already completed a previous qualification – or 'in-house' training (carried out before 4 July 2010).

Course Syllabus

Upon completion of the course, learners successfully completing this qualification will achieve an understanding of components and system operation, to carry out procedures relating to air conditioning systems:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills associated with the operation of air conditioning systems

  • Gain an awareness of the environmental impact of fluorinated greenhouse gases

  • Know the common procedures for recovering fluorinated greenhouse gases

  • Be able to demonstrate how to handle a refrigerant cylinder

  • Be able to connect and disconnect a recovery set to and from the service ports of a vehicle A/C system

  • Be able to operate a recovery set appropriately

Candidates are required to sit an online examination and carry out a practical skills assessment at the end of the course.
