Gareth Paterson is a retired Sergeant joined the British Army after leaving school at 16. He served 24 years in the Queens Dragoon Guards and the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He served operational tours of Northern Ireland, Former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. Gareth suffers from an auto immune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis resulting in fusion of the spine. He managed to complete his career and left the army in 2018 where he went on to start a new career in Cyber Security. Gareth has previously competed in the 2013 Dakar rally – with the Race2Recovery team and representing the UK in the 2016/17 Invictus Games. Gareth has been known to spend his time downhill mountain biking and endurance racing, proving little will hold him back. “I didn’t think that Esports would give me the buzz of real racing but I was wrong. I love competing against others and this brings it home into your living room”.

We are extremely proud and very excited to see Gareth race this weekend alongside the real Formula E teams and drivers.

As part of its partnership with UNICEF, Formula E has launched a new esports competition to raise funds that will go towards the global coronavirus appeal. Comprising two grids, one featuring all the teams and drivers from the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, and another with a selection of the fastest gamers, will compete in a ‘race royale’ style format from the safety of their own homes. A nine-week programme to be showcased live across Formula E digital assets, social and gaming platforms including Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, as well as Formula E broadcast partners.

To add to the excitement and in order for Formula E to blend the real and gaming worlds, the winning gamer will secure real-life track time on a Formula E circuit during a race weekend when global conditions allow.

Streams will be live between 1530 BST and 1715 BST on event day

Available on all @FiaFormulaE accounts across YouTube , Twitter, Facebook and Twitch.

Go get them Geordie…
