Mission Motorsport teams up with MSUK to Electrify Motorsport

With an increasing number of electric/hybrid vehicles on the road and the Government’s Road to Zero strategy pushing for a total ban on sales of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2040, it was inevitable that EV’s would find their way onto motorsport circuits.

Presenting a different set of hazards and dangers to safety crews and recovery personnel, many circuits were not confident in their knowledge of working with EV’s leading to many putting a blanket ban on the vehicles going on track.

Approaching Motorsport UK, the national membership organisation and governing body for four-wheel motorsport in the UK, to discuss how the issue could be resolved, Technical Training Manager David Guilfoyle designed a bespoke course allowing safety and recovery crews to have the confidence and knowledge to work with EV’s safely in the event of an accident involving an EV on circuit.

David said, “ With the adoption of EV vehicles, we felt that with the right information, we could bust some of the myths surrounding EV cars and help the sport keep up with high voltage developments in the automotive world. Motorsport rescue and recovery crews have already been handling dangerous hazards during motorsport incidents for decades. This course allows those who are responsible for the recovery and safety of cars on track to become fully educated with the knowledge they need to work safely and at minimal risk.”

Funded by MSUK and the British Motorsport Training Trust, David, alongside Alan Page of PTC Services, will be delivering the course to over 120 people across the UK at 15 different locations including MSUK HQ in Bicester, Thruxton, and Croft.

John Ryan, MSUK Sport, Safety and Technical Director said, “This is a big step forward ensuring all rescue and recovery units in the UK have a suitably trained crew member to manage any incidents with an electric or hybrid vehicle. We thank Mission Motorsport for their assistance in delivering this course.”
